An Interview with Kazuo Inamori in NHK World

Kazuo Inamori, Chairman Emeritus of Japan Airlines has been widely hailed for rebuilding the once bankrupt carrier in less than three years. Well known as the founder of Japan's second largest telecommunication business, he once again succeeded. NHK World's Tsukasa Uesugi interviewed him to find out the key to his success.

Inamori surprised investors when he became the new CEO of Japan Airlines in February 2010. The flagship carrier had just filed for bankruptcy protection.

"Everyone said it was impossible for an amateur like me. But in the second year we generated 180 billion yen in profit. That was the largest profit of any aviation business in the world and many considered that a miraculous turnaround."

They did not achieve this without pain. They sold off its head office. One third of the airline's 48,000 employees had to leave. Most importantly, Inamori focused on changing the company's mindset—arguing that everyone must always think from the customers' point of view.
